Scope and method of study. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a children's book and a regular textbook on third grade students' knowledge acquisition and attitudes toward social studies. Four classes were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group was read a children's book and the other read their regular textbook. Scope and method of study. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a children's book and a regular textbook on third grade students' knowledge acquisition and attitudes toward social studies. Four classes were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group was read a children's book and the other read their regular textbook. Students were pretested on knowledge and attitudes.

Findings and conclusions. The groups did not differ on knowledge acquisition, however, the groups did differ on several attitude items. Students preferred being taught with the children's book and showed a more positive attitude toward social studies class than students taught with their regular textbook. There was no difference between the groups' ranking of social studies as a school subject. The classes taught with the children's book preferred having their teacher read the children's book to reading their regular textbook. The researcher concluded that the use of a children's book positively affected attitudes but failed to affect achievement. It was recommended that future research examine the effect of literature on higher level thinking rather than simple recall.
