Scope and method of study. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a children's book and a regular textbook on third grade students' knowledge acquisition and attitudes toward social studies. Four classes were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group was read a children's book and the other read their regular textbook. Students were pretested on knowledge and attitudes.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a children's book and a regular textbook on third grade students' knowledge acquisition and attitudes toward social studies. Four classes were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group was read a children's book and the other read their regular textbook. Students were pretested on knowledge and attitudes.
520 $a Findings and conclusions. The groups did not differ on knowledge acquisition, however, the groups did differ on several attitude items. Students preferred being taught with the children's book and showed a more positive attitude toward social studies class than students taught with their regular textbook. There was no difference between the groups' ranking of social studies as a school subject. The classes taught with the children's book preferred having their teacher read the children's book to reading their regular textbook. The researcher concluded that the use of a children's book positively affected attitudes but failed to affect achievement. It was recommended that future research examine the effect of literature on higher level thinking rather than simple recall.
