This case study depicts the culture, or social architecture, of a major textbook publishing house through a description of the development of pluralistic art instructional materials for elementary classrooms. Included within the study is information and insight about decision-making procedures addressing political and economic constraints inherent to the textbook publishing industry. Multicultural (gender, race, religion, class, age) representation within the instructional materials is discussed at length, to include a sociolinguistic treatment of the text.

Written from the perspective of the participant observer of the study, who also served as project editor for the textbook project, the study reflects a singular interpretation of the process of textbook development. The information presented is of potential value to scholars and laypersons interested in the culture of the textbook industry and the decision-making procedures through which textbooks are developed.
