Elementary schoolbook maps represent the typical cartographic product to which most youngsters have access. These maps are therefore of critical importance in determining how millions of schoolchildren think about space and understand geographic facts. Yet before these children actually see a textbook map, numerous decisions must be made regarding content, quantity, design, teachability, and strategies of use. Ultimately, the forces of the marketplace and state textbook adoption criteria play as much of a role as the children's own needs in establishing the cartographic offerings of a given textbook series.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The first part of this study explores schoolbook maps in the broad contexts of policy and use, focusing on the publishing industry and textbook adoptions. The cultural value of maps and map skills is addressed as well. The second part examines map design, with both an in-depth comparative analysis of the maps in eight fifth-grade social studies series and a discussion of the results of one-on-one conversations with teachers and students about selected groups of maps. In this way, all the components of the map network are brought together: creators (publishers), analysts (book evaluators), and users (teachers and students). By viewing this network as a whole we gain a clearer understanding of the real-world constraints that contribute to the making and use of the final map product.

Ninety-five maps from fifth- and sixth-grade social studies textbooks of varying quality are presented with detailed critiques. Where appropriate, the maps are compared and contrasted with regard to specific cartographic design techniques. In addition, fifty-five maps, organized into eleven groups of like theme, were discussed with teachers and students in terms of teachability and ease of use. These "case studies" are presented not as a means of establishing strict cartographic guidelines for map creators but as demonstrations of what works and what does not.
