This dissertation was concerned with the problem of making recent developments in composition instruction available to high school students. Statistics show a time lag between research findings and their implementation at the high school level which approaches 30 years. 520 $a Chapter One introduces students to four invention plans; listing, brainstorming, looping, and cubing. It also guides students through successive drafts of a student paper to illustrate revision and editing techniques.
520 $a Chapter Two uses a peer editing checklist and assignments written to an audience other than the teacher/evaluator. The checklist and assignments are designed to teach students to recognize their omissions and private code words which puzzle readers who lack the writer's personal experiences.
520 $a In Chapter Three Burke's Pentad provides students with a structured approach to literary analysis. Students write a first paper by using a single area of the Pentad to explore a story. Then they write a second paper by combining two or more of the five Pentad areas in what Burke called ratios to analyze the story in more depth than they did in the first paper.
520 $a Chapter Four uses a five-step approach to research writing. The chapter reduces the number of steps in the research process from the traditional 15 to 20 steps to five. The mechanics of notetaking, documentation, and formatting are also included.
