The importance of the Arabic language is discussed first. Arabic is the native language of around two hundred million people. It has been an important language throughout history, due to its religious and cultural roles and the strategic position of its speakers' land.

The first chapter is a detailed survey of research, seminars and symposiums, journals, and other literature about teaching Arabic to non-natives. Special attention is paid to efforts to teacher Arabic as a foreign language in the Arab countries.

The second chapter is devoted to major efforts to teach the Arabic writing system. The efforts are analyzed and two major problems resulting from them are discussed. One problem is a lack of accuracy in teaching the alphabet and the number of forms for each letter. The other is a lack of awareness that learning written forms is not separated from the total experience of language learning. This results in use of artificial examples and nonsense words.

The third chapter has the results of a word count of ten textbooks. The verbs from the word list are compared to those from two more lists completed by other researchers: Abdo's list and the list of Rammuny and McCarus.

The focal point of chapter four is on the grammar in textbooks. Different views about the importance of grammar in teaching Arabic are presented. Selected grammar topics are traced to reveal how they are treated in various textbooks.

The final chapters is an analysis of the textbooks' major methods of teaching Arabic to non-native speakers. The grammar translation method is still the most prevalent. Audio-visual aids are not widely nor effectively used, and teachers' guides are not available for most of the textbooks.
