The topic of this dissertation is personal sanctuary and its benefits in life. This study identified existing literature on the topic, explored and uncovered new data through interviews of ten retired executives, and contributed to the ongoing discussion. The phenomenological research approach provided a deep understanding of each person's experience with personal sanctuary. Upon reading this report, a person, employer, coworker, family member or friend can gain insight and take action to support one's ongoing use of personal sanctuary, a facet of living reported as highly valuable. Dozens of interview questions and hours of discussion for each interview addressed and answered the following primary research questions: What kinds of personal sanctuaries do people have, how are they used and what benefits do people attribute to their personal sanctuary? Personal interviews with participants yielded extensive details and specific examples. The interviews contribute to the existing literature by increasing knowledge of various kinds and applications of personal sanctuaries, and by providing the story of each person's experience with personal sanctuary. These stories, examples and descriptions add to the existing body of knowledge by illuminating that for many people, personal sanctuary has more to do with a state of mind than with a place or certain activity. For those whose personal sanctuary is a state of mind (for example: applying a thinking process to a situation, or, walking and thinking through problems), the predominant benefit they appreciate is the time to think creatively, strategically, thoroughly, and/or randomly. The thinking done in personal sanctuary was described by nearly all participants as the best way to resolve challenges, find peace with life's difficulties, and acknowledge feelings of being pleased with life. In Chapter Four, Presentation and Analysis of Data, descriptions of the ten participants and their personal sanctuaries are contrasted in a two-page table and on several descriptive pages, showing the reader comparisons and patterns among the ten personal sanctuaries. All participants reported that time spent in their personal sanctuary results in a more positive state of mind, benefiting their lives, their jobs, and in many cases also benefiting the people in their lives.
