With the advent of implantable medical devices, and miniaturization of RF components, it is now practical and desirable to be able to communicate with these devices. Communications systems for implantable devices must transmit to a receiver outside the body, and have a very limited power supply. Therefore, an efficient antenna is required. This thesis analyzes several types of wire antennas including monopole, dipole, and various odd-shaped wired antennas. This analysis is based on size, shape, insulation type, and thickness. Radiation patterns, specific absorption rate (SAR) values, and input impedance are analyzed, and simulation results are compared with measurements. From these simulations and measurements, a guide to designing wire antennas for implantation in the body is developed, and an antenna is developed that would have the desired attributes for use with an implantable medical device.
