This thesis set out to address the question: "Does mentorship received during articles affect career goals within the legal profession?" Because mentorship during articling is an integral component of professional socialization for students, the dynamics that constitute a positive mentoring relationship are explored. The articling period is particularly important because it is the only time during their training that law students are able to apply classroom knowledge to real life cases. Students' early exposure to law can have real implications for their careers. If students are dissatisfied with their career choice even before they have received certification and begun practicing law, it raises serious questions about the professional training they have received thus far. This study is unique because it focuses on the experiences of bar admission students. Students have been largely absent from previous legal research. The experiences of law students contribute a more comprehensive account of the entry to and advancement in legal careers. Analyses were conducted to determine what factors students attributed to a positive mentoring experience. The analyses were then extended to determine what constituted a satisfactory articling experience for students. Next, a path model was constructed to predict professional commitment among bar admission students. The Bar Admission Survey (Kay & Hagan, 1998) provides the social survey data for the analyses.
