This thesis involves the study of business anthropology and culture from several perspectives. First, I will review the field of anthropology as practiced in the business environment from its early beginnings in the 1930s until today. Within that context, I will highlight some of the key anthropological theories that were developed, and the role culture plays in this environment. In particular, I will focus on definitions of culture in the traditional anthropological setting and compare them to the view American business executives seem to have of the word "culture" in the corporate setting. In addition, I will feature a cross-cultural behavior study conducted by renowned sociologist Geert Hofstede. Finally, I will examine the role that business anthropologists and management consultants play in today's corporate environment, and explore whether a synergistic relationship is possible.
