Studies indicate that piano sounds and techniques have changed drastically in the past fifty years. Although compositions incorporating piano modifications, new performing techniques and non-standard notation have served to expand the repertoire and the realm of possibilities for the instrument, music of this kind does not receive the recognition it merits. This paper, therefore, offers a comprehensive evaluation of some of these methods including silently depressed keys, sostenuto pedal, clusters, inside the piano, prepared piano, and additional sounds. Background information provides their definitions, functions (how they work), sounds, origins (the year and the first composer to use the technique), notations, and noted works by significant composers. Additionally, this paper serves as a contemporary music guidebook listing 120 pieces, alphabetized by composer's last name, that utilize these ideas, and provides detailed descriptive information and musical examples for each piece. Different works by the same composer are listed in order of the publishing year. Descriptions of works contain the publisher, publishing year, level of difficulty, and new performing techniques and devices used. Other information may include incorporated compositional techniques, sounds, musical expressions, atmospheres, textures, forms, pitfalls that need to be avoided, and any interesting facts regarding the compositions. At the end, the paper provides an index to help readers locate the piece.
