Musicians lack objective information regarding how best to train and utilize their bodies in performance. Piano performance makes extreme demands of the upper body, especially the small muscles and nerves required for fine coordination. Many pianists sustain injuries. These injuries are often so subtle that physicians cannot satisfactorily diagnose and treat musician's ailments. Among musicians, female pianists report the highest number of occupational injuries.

The final goal of this dissertation is to discuss some of the practical issues faced by the female pianist as she tries to establish a career. While gathered statistics offer evidence that females make up a greater number of today's pianists and piano teachers, the percentage of females who are internationally recognized is perhaps growing smaller.
