New Mexico organizations were surveyed as to their current use of knowledge management (KM) practices. The organizations included in the sample for survey were small and mid-sized enterprises ranging from 10 to 499 employees and from four sectoral groups---manufacturing, business services, health services, and government.

The survey instrument used was a modification of a tool developed and piloted by Statistics Canada and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Organizations were asked questions about the knowledge management practices they were currently using, the reason for using those practices, the results of using the set of practices, and the administration of the KM program.

An assessment was made of the responses received from the New Mexico organizations. Frequencies were tabulated for practices used, the time of adoption, and the plan for future adoption of the individual practices. Respondents were asked to rank the importance of the reasons for the adoption of the practices using a Likert scale. Using exploratory factor analysis, the original 18 reasons listed in the survey were collapsed to four factors. Respondents were also asked to use a Likert scale to rank the perceived impact of the ensemble of KM practices on their organizational performance. As a follow up to this question, five "field leaders" were interviewed about how they measured the impact of their KM practices. Finally, frequency data were calculated for the number of organizations with dedicated budgets and personnel committed to KM initiatives.

The collected data were then used to assess if differences existed among organizations that varied in number of employees and by sectoral grouping. No significant differences were found in the number or type of practices, the time of adoption of practices, the reasons for adoption of the practices, the perceived results from the practices, or the resources committed by the organization for KM.

This study offers a portrait of the current state of KM use in New Mexico small to mid-sized organizations. A conclusion of the study was that there has been uniform adoption of the KM practices included in the survey tool across all size and sectoral groupings.
