The investigator employed the archival data base of the RHCJC (N = 6245 cases) to describe the type of cases resolved by the court, the nature of the sanctions imposed, and the frequency of defendant compliance with the sanctions. As anticipated, the largest proportion of cases handled by the RHCJC were drug related, very few defendants were incarcerated, and the strictest sanction assigned to defendants was most often mandatory substance abuse treatment. Many defendants who were charged with non drug-related offenses were nevertheless assigned to mandatory substance abuse treatment, indicating that drug use is a factor in many offenses other than drug offenses. Compliance with assigned sanctions was greater for community service sanctions and social service interventions than for substance abuse treatment.
