(b) What are the situational barriers that thwart the wives of the enlisted military personnel in their educational experiences? (c) What are the institutional barriers that thwart the wives of the enlisted military personnel in their educational experiences? (d) What are the dispositional barriers that thwart the wives of the enlisted military personnel in their educational experiences? (e) What are the factors that have been identified by wives of enlisted military personnel that should be included in a campus wide support model?

Participants for the study were wives of enlisted military personnel who were students at Clovis Community College in the 2003--2004 academic year. Participants were selected from an institutional database; letters to wives with postage paid return envelopes were included with an invitation to participate in the study. The 27 participants chosen consisted of 20 who responded by mail, and seven who heard of the study and volunteered to be interviewed.

The instrument used included two parts. The first part of the questionnaire addressed demographic data and the second part addressed situational, institutional and dispositional barriers. The researcher used categorizing to identify themes and sub themes as respondents were asked to name the major barriers that affect their participation in college. Then the researcher computed percentages by using number of mentions as a base. The percentages of each category gave a generalized view of the barriers that these wives of enlisted military personnel had encountered during their educational experience at Clovis Community College. Percentages of 50 or over were considered significant to include as elements translated into a model for student support. Findings included barriers in all three categories: situational, institutional and dispositional areas. From the data in regard to situational, institutional and dispositional barriers, components for a campus wide support model for those students were recommended.
