Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2004.
The mental health field is facing a grave staffing shortage in regards to direct care staff. The seriousness of this issue is exhibited by the fact that patient care is being seriously affected because there is not enough staff to properly treat them. As for the causes of the shortage, they range from low salaries to the stressful nature of the field. In response to this, the most common solution is to pay employees higher salaries but due to tight monetary constraints this is not possible. Due to this, organizations must look outside the box to deal and one of the most effective ways appears to be by working from the inside out; make employees feel good about their jobs so they will stay and in return they will refer people who would want to work for a company which is held in such high regard by their employees.
