Thesis (Ph.D.)--George Mason University, 2005.
This dissertation examines the economic effects of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 and the beginning of the Great Depression. Previous studies on the quantitative effects of the tariff have underestimated its detrimental influence. The effect of trade policy on monetary policy will be examined and the tariff linked to the collapse of the international domestic financial system. When these effects are brought to light, the tariff appears to be responsible for more economic damage than conventional measures have indicated.
