Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Kansas, 2003.
The current study examined the use of learning strategies among college Japanese language learners across academic majors. Participants were 231 students enrolled in various levels of Japanese language courses in universities in the U.S. The Strategy Inventory for Japanese Language Learning (SIJLL), a self-report questionnaire, was developed based on the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), to measure the students' use of learning strategies. The Cronbach's alpha of the SIJLL was .92. The SIJLL was divided into six strategy subscales: Memory Strategy, Cognitive Strategy, Compensation Strategy, Metacognitive Strategy, Affective Strategy, and Social Strategy. The instructors evaluated their students' Japanese achievement in areas of oral skills, grammar knowledge, mastery of kanji, and overall course grade.

Japanese language learners reported using a variety of learning strategies, especially cognitive, social, compensation and metacognitive strategies. Trying to learn about Japanese culture and inferencing for unknown words were the most often used strategies, followed by strategies to learn specific linguistic elements of Japanese, kanji in particular. There were no statistically significant differences in the use of strategies or in their Japanese achievement according to their academic majors. The use of strategies did not correlate significantly with their achievement.
