Demographic and economic growth are pushing deeper into the Mea Chaem watershed, Chiang Mai, Thailand. A lack of land use plans is creating critical problems such as the restriction and misuse of the land available. This has a significant effect on the sustainability of forest resources in the Mea Chaem area. Effective land use planning and research into the causes of these problems is urgently needed to explain and uncover possible solutions to the problems that exist in this area.

The purpose of this study is to describe current practices in land use and determine what changes need to be made for the efficient sustainable reform of Mea Chaem watershed land use management, as well as for the protection, management, and sustainable use of land in Mea Chaem watershed basin.

Satellite images and 37 points of land use sampling are analyzed to identify the change of land use and shifting cultivation pattern, and GIS techniques were applied to evaluate the environmental problems in the Mea Chaem watershed. The land use classification map was prepared and the values of each land use area by elevation and land use property were produced respectively.

Excessive agricultural activity of shifting cultivation in the Mea Chaem watershed not only decreased the forest area, but also changed the primary forest into secondary woodland of shrub. On the phase of soil property, it accelerated the soil and gully erosion, and acidification. To solve these environmental problems, the most important step is to settle the agriculture from shifting cultivation to permanent cropping.
