Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Alabama in Huntsville, 2004.
As complexity in the operating environment has increased, modern organizations have evolved from being defined by management structures based on centralized control and standardized processes to utilizing systems of management which emphasize flexible relationships and adaptable methods. Information technology has made a similar progression from a focus on formalized task automation to promoting flexible knowledge networks. Intranets, intra-organizational networks based on Internet protocols, have the flexibility to support the constant modifications to processes and relationships that result from organizations adapting to rapidly changing operating conditions. Many of the descriptive terms applied to intranets (flexible, open, informal), are also characteristics of organic management systems.

The presence of intranets is evaluated to determine the association between intranet adoption and embracing more flexible, responsive, and less hierarchical management system characteristics. This research is based on case study data from organizations without intranets and survey data from organizations that adopted intranets. The difference in level of organic management system characteristics is evaluated from the perspective of knowledge workers in technology-driven organizations.

The unsupervised flow of information on intranets contradicts the traditional mechanistic operating environment while supporting many organic management system characteristics. Study results indicate the introduction of intranets is associated with an increase in organic properties in technology-driven organizations. This network connectivity supports a shift in organizational power structures as information sharing and retrieval become less dependent on a formal hierarchy.
