This project addressed the problem of low success and satisfaction rates of community college developmental writing students. Research shows that the majority of students drop out of college due to non-academic or personal, life-challenging reasons. Therefore, in response to these critical issues, this study explored instructors' perceptions of the changes in their instruction after a semester-long training program that emphasized personal and social skills within a basic writing course. This study also considered students' perceptions of changes in their own behaviors and attitudes after their basic writing courses.

Six basic writing instructors participated in five, bi-weekly training sessions. In a workshop format, they practiced ways to incorporate personal and social skills and concepts related to accountability and interdependence within their writing classrooms. Data was collected and analyzed from these training sessions, teacher interviews and journals, classroom observations, and one student focus group. Analysis of data revealed that the teachers perceived that they had adapted and integrated the concepts and activities from the workshops to fit within their own classroom structures. In addition, the students perceived that the integration of academic and personal skills enriched their basic writing classroom experiences. This study establishes a training model by which other basic writing instructors can develop an academic writing curriculum integrated with social and personal skills. The model can also assist instructors in addressing a more holistic approach to teaching in order to encourage success and retention of community college basic writing students. Finally, this study underscores the importance of further research in the field of teacher training in higher education.
