This dissertation explores the connection between writing and consciousness. Writing is considered as a means of expressing and healing the writer's consciousness to illustrate and facilitate psychospiritual transformation. Consciousness is considered from a variety of psychological perspectives, including Eastern spiritualities/psychologies, transpersonal psychology, depth psychology, and several theories of personality. The methodology is arts-based heuristic research that uses creative writing as the vehicle for study.

520 $a The literature review reveals that the components of this study---consciousness, the writing process, and lesbian literature---have been explored thoroughly. However, their intersection remains largely unexplored. This dissertation is unique in documenting the process of writing a novella that explores the issues of lesbian identity and same-sex marriage as they relate to a lesbian writer's psychospiritual transformation. The dissertation tells two stories: one fictional, one the story of writing the story, both exploring and illustrating the process of transformation, both integral to the discovery process. Scholarly and personal reflection are woven into journal entries and tied to the creative process.
520 $a This dissertation makes three original contributions. The first is a detailed description of the process of arts-based research in which a three-stage dialectic of transformation is identified and defined. The second is a documented application of this process, confirming its usefulness. The third is the resulting original work of fiction.
520 $a Conclusions confirm that writing for the sake of discovery is a form of meditation that allows the writer's issues to emerge in the writing and thus move into the realm of awareness. Specifically, the fictional exploration of same-sex marriage, levels of consciousness, and lesbian identity deepened the writer's self-awareness and led to psychospiritual transformation. The primary implication for further research is that articulating the dialectic of transformation as a method of inquiry may help others find a way into themselves and the knowing to be uncovered by and in their creative processes. This dissertation also advocates a return to the importance of subjectivity, self, presence, intuition, creativity, and art in the academic search for knowledge and truth---the value of arts-based heuristic research.
