This study was designed to assess the efficacy of environment-based education programs to significantly promote environmentally responsible attitudes and behaviour. Focus was on Destination Conservation, a fully integrated school resource conservation and waste reduction program. We investigated program effects (the extent to which learning in the school program is transferred to the home environment) as well as self-described attitudes and behaviours towards the environment of the participants and non-participants in the Destination Conservation program. Finally, we looked at the self-described attitudes and behaviours of parents/guardians and their perception of their child's attitudes and behaviours towards the environment. Five public school classes were chosen from a list provided by Destination Conservation of participating schools from around British Columbia, based on the teachers' degree of implementation of the program. Those classes were matched with an additional five classes that served as control groups based on the participating teacher's recommendations. Although our research did not show that the Destination Conservation intervention had a statistically significant effect on the attitudes and behaviours of children and their influence on their parents, our findings did suggest that girls may be more responsive to some aspects of environmental programs than boys and that stronger pro-environmental attitudes among parents tend to be accompanied by stronger pro-environmental behaviours.
