Thesis (M.M.Ed.)--University of Louisville, 2004.
This qualitative study examines two kindergarten classes in an urban public school. In the study, teacher A was committed, in her teaching, to the value of music as an essential instructional tool. Teacher B used music equally with other pedagogic strategies. The investigator examined daily classroom activities focusing on the role of music in literacy development. Data collection included observations, individual student achievements, teacher interviews, field notes, reflections, and videotapes. In both classrooms, four themes regarding the role of music in the reading curriculum emerged: (1) Engagement, (2) Self Satisfaction---with sub-themes enjoyment, confidence, (3) Recall, and (4) Compliance---with sub-themes transitions, instructions. Connections between music and three reading cueing systems: semantics, syntax, and graphophonics, are cited. Analysis suggests that music in kindergarten classrooms benefits literacy development semantically by integrating the music elements, syntactically by hearing melodic contour and rhythm, and graphophonically by developing music-based aural discrimination. Suggestions for future study are given.
