This thesis is an investigation of applying decision theory and influence diagram to evaluate environmental and economic impacts of agricultural cropping management practice alternatives. A review of decision analysis techniques used for constructing decision-making support software systems is given. The model consists of two parts: an influence diagram model which represents the decision making process structure integrates probability distributions of related variables, relationships between variables and the objective function for utility evaluation; and, a graphical user interface which communicates between the influence diagram model and the decision maker. The objective of the system is to rank farm management alternatives in preference order consistent with their environmental and economical impacts.

The influence diagram model consists of: chance nodes that represent individual parameters, or variables, for fields in the watershed; decision nodes that represent the management practice alternatives; utility nodes that represent real numeric values of these parameters in dollars; and, directed links indicating relationships between variables. The influence diagram model was developed for the Stratford Avon watershed in Southern Ontario. It was to demonstrate how the system can be used for targeting, ranking and predicting the best management practices from both an environmental point of view and an economic point of view. It also returns the combined result of environmental evaluation and economic evaluation of any configuration of management practices in the watershed to the decision maker fast through its graphic user interface.
