Advancements in object oriented technology and its widespread use has led to component oriented systems that utilize event-based communication where interactions between the components are via events. Events are used to exchange data as well as order the execution of actions in different components. Configuring a system involves first selecting a set of components to be integrated and then specifying the event and data dependencies between them.

We have designed and implemented EDisC (Event Distribution and Coordination framework) that provides mechanisms for both data distribution and coordination. The framework introduces a resource management model which utilizes synchronization patterns and global invariants to solve a wide range of synchronization problems. It also includes a mode management model which observes behaviors of components in different modes and quenches the flow of unnecessary event notifications to improve system performance. EDisC supports event correlation for components to monitor occurrence of event patterns by providing correlation filters configured using a correlation specification. The design of EDisC and its implementation on different platforms is discussed.
