This thesis-project, Reclaiming the Essential Role of Women Ministers in the Undisputed Letters of Paul for the Ministry Formation Program in the Diocese of Toledo, focuses on the preparation of lay ministers in this diocesan program, utilizing a three-part methodology of practical theology consisting of praxis-theory-praxis.

The first praxis is a reflection on the ministry of women today and yesterday, including a reflective overview, followed by discussions of lay ministry formation in light of the Second Vatican Council, the role of women as ministers in the gospels, and initial impressions of Paul's view of women as ministers.

The theory section of the paper addresses three topics. The first topic is the role of women ministers from the post-New Testament church to the modern church, including a survey of the history, reflections on current practice, and concluding reflections. Second, this section discusses the person of Paul, including information on the life of the apostle, particularly the autobiographical story contained in 1 Corinthians and Galatians as well as the biographical details in the Acts of the Apostles, Paul's cultural context, and the cities in which he ministered. Third, it explores the undisputed letters of Paul in several parts: (a) a focus on Paul's theology of baptism, which includes baptismal formulas, freedom in Christ, and narrative examples; (b) an exploration of the question, "negative references to women in Paul?," which includes references to women's veils, to women keeping silent in the churches, and to an allegory of Christian freedom (often considered problematic); (c) a presentation of the positive treatment of women in Paul, which includes the topics of power in weakness, the use of feminine imagery including Woman Wisdom in the Old Testament and Paul, equality in marriage, and equality in ministry. The second praxis describes the shared reflection on theory directed toward renewed praxis. It also discusses the formation of the focus group and the closing ritual from the focus group's retreat experience which celebrated hope and encouraged the participants to share their hope with others.
