This document provides an overview of definitions and status of creativity assessment from various perspectives, in terms of its potential protective factor in coping, as well as reportedly increased vulnerability to psychopathology among eminent creatives. The known correlates between creativity and several clinical personality assessments are reported. It is argued that there is a relationship between creativity and certain disorders, and between creativity and certain personality and diagnostic assessments.

This investigation compiled a preliminary creativity scale for the MMPI-2 using a criterion-based, contrasting group strategy with a total sample of 208 students from two Midwestern universities. MMPI-2 validity indices were used to omit invalid data sets, a total of 192 were included. Of these, two thirds were selected and used to identify MMPI2 items were included for consideration. There were 62 items significantly correlated at alpha .05 or higher with group membership in either the highest third of Creative Behavior Inventory scorers or the lowest third of the sample. Items at alpha .01 or higher were retained, along with the highest contributors to the structural matrix, in the present version, the C scale. Psychometrics on the C scale were obtained by applying it to the remaining third of the sample.

The resulting 32 item C scale has good discriminant ability; it adequately distinguished between high and low CBI scorers in the replication sample (with 91% of high CBI scorers accurately classified, and 13% of the low CBI scorers classified incorrectly). The C scale reliability is also good, with inter-item correlations ranging from -.516 to .565, item-to-total correlations significant at .005 or better, total alpha coefficients at .65, and Guttman's split half at .66. Existing MMPI-2 scales were compared with the C scale, and several were found to be significantly correlated: Scale 4 (r = .185); Scale 5 (r = .330); Scale 9 (r = .358); and Scale O (r = -.489) as well as GF (r = .182); MAC-R (r = .252); ES (r = -.019) and SOD (r = -.560). Limitations of this preliminary scale are discussed, as are suggestions for further research to improve its standardization and generalizability.
