Many schools across the United States are adopting cooperative learning teaching strategies to replace the traditional style of individualized learning, which has been used in the nation's schools for many years. Proponents of cooperative learning claim that there are many benefits to using cooperative learning groups for teaching and learning. Although much research has been conducted on cooperative learning, few studies have focused on the relationship between personality types and cooperative learning in mathematics.

This research project attempted to determine whether personality types are related to cooperative learning in mathematics. Data for this study were collected through student journals, observation rubrics, and the Murphy Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children. The experiences, thoughts, and perceptions of the students at Moline Elementary will help to determine answers to the following question:

Is cooperative learning a preferred instructional technique for certain personality types in a sixth grade mathematics classroom?

The information obtained in this study should be useful to the mathematics teachers at Moline Elementary as they attempt to improve the ways in which they teach mathematics. In addition, the information could also help other educators understand how students learn math.
