Thesis (D.Min.)--Andover Newton Theological School, 2004.
This paper explores the process involved in the metamorphosis of the biblical Satan from innocuous adversary in the Old Testament to the Titan of Evil in the New Testament. Satan's metamorphosis begins with a split in the Divine personality whereby the negative aspects of God are assigned to an oppositional being. This process was likely the result of post-exilic Hebrew monotheism, which gave rise to the inevitable problems of theodicy. Additionally, religious syncretism, the popularity of Hellenism, and Jewish apocalyptic literature, helped to further distinguish Satan as an independent, supernatural adversary of God. The Satan of the New Testament continues in the role of adversary (Satan is always a character of opposition) as the archenemy of Jesus. The fullest exposition of Satan occurs in the final book of the Bible, the Book of Revelation. In Revelation, Satan is once and forever defeated by God and remanded to the fires of hell for all eternity. This paper concludes with a practical lesson plan for college-level educators interested in teaching the biblical Satan's story.
