This dissertation applies textlinguistic principles to Exod 15:22--17:7 using Eep Talstra's computerized textlinguistic analysis as a springboard for formal analysis. I use textlinguistics to serve this study in three main areas: (1) To identify blocks of text and explain the relationship of a block of text to other adjacent blocks of texts. (2) To identify various syntactical patterns and explain their use on the level of the discourse as a whole. (3) To prepare a framework for semantic analysis of the various groupings of texts.

Talstra's textlinguistic analysis distinguishes form from function and gives priority to form over function. The method is iterative, bottom-up, pattern matching, and distributional.

The bottom-up approach is a cumulative process that begins by identifying the smallest grammatical units (i.e., morphemes) and then by a process of combining elements at one level forms larger ones (i.e., words, phrases, clauses, and sentences). Grammatical units are parsed (identified) by matching each construction with a grammatical pattern in a dataset of patterns. The various grammatical units are sorted and studied according to their distribution throughout the text. The entire process is iterative (i.e., it uses the latter results to reshape earlier analysis) and is applied to one type of linguistic information at a time in a strict order: morphology (verbal, nominal, and suffix morphemes), lexicon (part of speech, i.e., definite article, conjunction, noun, pronoun, etc.), morpho-syntax (morphology + part of speech + word order), syntax, and semantics.

The analysis of Exod 15:22--17:7 has yielded some specific results: (1) Exodus 15:22--17:7 can be established as a discourse unit based on both linguistic formal markers and content. (2) The reiteration of a pattern within the three episodes of the narrative may point to a distinct genre that may be classified as a "genre of complaint." (3) The text was segmented into paragraphs by focusing on breaks caused by clause type and other linguistic elements. (4) The semantic analysis confirms studies previously done in this area, and explores some semantically loaded syntactical structures (e.g., fronting, reiteration, and cataphoric fulfillment). (5) On the basis of textlinguistic, semantic and literary analysis of the Complaining Narrative (CN) in Exod 15:22--17:7, I argue that the CN is also a story of deliverance.

By the textlinguistic form-to-function approach, the interpreter can grasp the structure of the language (syntax). It helps him to better understand the distribution of the linguistic elements of the text and the syntagmatic function of clause types, which are useful in determining some semantic aspects of the text. However, this textlinguistic approach has been complemented in the dissertation with literary studies and other aspects for the interpretation of the biblical text that assist the interpreter in achieving a solid understanding of the meaning of the text, such as, context, content, theme, literary patterns, etc. The latter are issues that a form-to-function computerized analysis cannot and will not be able to provide.
