Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'i, 1995.
This dissertation delineates the history of the performing arts in education in Hawai'i but does not address performances for a child audience. Drama, puppetry, and creative movement have gradually found their place in the education of Hawai'i's young people since the early days of the Hawaiian nation. The culture of the ancient Hawaiians placed a central focus on the expressive arts which were suppressed under the influence of New England Protestant missionaries. The passage of time spawned a new generation of missionaries whose interest in performing arts education in the latter half of the nineteenth century manifested in early dramatic activity on the island of O'ahu.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A concentrated effort in support of the performing arts in education emerged during the fifties with the founding of Honolulu Theatre for Youth. The 1950s were portentous years for the performing arts in Hawai'i, but the 1960s blazed the trail for new state projects with the inception of the Artists-in-the-Schools, a pilot project aimed at fostering students' sensitivity through the arts. During the seventies, Artists-in-the-Schools launched a creative movement program in the islands. The art of puppetry was lacking in the educational setting but the introduction of puppetry into the curriculum at the University of Hawai'i earmarked the start of an important era. A program for children in the performing arts on the island of Maui gradually evolved into a key organization servicing the entire county.

The eighties introduced the Alliance for Drama Education, a significant provider of dramatic activity for children and youth in Hawai'i, and Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education, an essential organization in support of the arts for young people. During this seminal period, the Department of Education tendered its stamp of approval in the shape of the Performing Arts Learning Centers and one decade later, the performing arts were afforded recognition in the form of a state drama guide for kindergartners through twelfth grade.

A strong movement in the nineties towards the infusion of arts in the schools corresponded with the restructuring of Hawai'i's school system. Under the auspices of a handful of performing arts proponents and organizations, the future points to integration of the performing arts as a vital component in the education of young people in Hawai'i.
