Thesis (M.A.)--Prescott College, 2004.
This thesis explores in depth the relationship of spirituality to the natural environment. The conclusion reached in Spirituality and the Environment is that the historical and current degradation of Mother Earth can be checked by a combination of governmental and individual actions, and recognition and honoring of humankind's spiritual link to the natural world. The objective is to elucidate the historical context that has fostered a cultural acceptance of dominion over inanimate and animate nature. The methodology incorporates a weaving that traces and compares the foundations of both ancient cultures and Western civilization to the present, influenced first, by pagan, and later, by Judeo-Christian spirituality. Overpopulation, loss of biodiversity, extinction of flora and fauna, pollution, and decreasing natural resources are evidence of an ongoing cultural belief in an unending horn of plenty.
