This study examined the ecological role of Cercopagis pengoi as an exotic predator in the zooplankton communities of the Finger Lakes, and assessed potential means to control its propagation at the diapause stage. C. pengoi abundances first were compared with natural and biological parameters across a productivity gradient. Abundances showed a negative relationship with productivity (p = 0.034), and increased from 2001 to 2002 (p = 0.099). The integration of observed population numbers with an energetic model developed specifically for this study suggested that C. pengoi relies on more than one type of native zooplankton for its nutrition. Experiments were performed to determine the most effective treatment for reducing resting egg development. We determined that steam cleaning and prolonged desiccation were the most advisable measures for recreational boaters, and recommended that treatments be combined for greatest effectiveness. Finally, analysis of C. pengoi tailspine hooks showed evidence of sexual dimorphism (p < 0.05).
