Thesis (M.S.)--Mississippi State University, 2004.
This study examined the potential for developing an urban tree inventory on the campus of Mississippi State University. The objective of this thesis project was to develop an efficient methodology to characterize urban woody vegetation as to species, size, condition, and location using remotely sensed information and to formulate a timecost analysis for each methodology. An assessment was made on each methodology to see which applications would be best for performing and maintaining such a project. Another key component of this thesis project was to explore, assess and develop conclusions with regard to the use of remote sensing products in an application of this type or similar urban environmental studies, particularly, how well it supported and meshed with traditional ground-based methodologies. It was found that in micro-scaled projects such as this, remote-sensing methodologies such as aerial photography increase the time-cost efficiency of a ground-based inventory.
