The objective of this study was to determine the effect of feeding nitrogen supplements on the efficiency of production of weaned calves grazing tropical pastures. Forty-five calves were randomly assigned to three treatments: T1-control, T2-non-protein nitrogen supplementation (poultry litter), and T3-protein nitrogen supplementation (soybean meal). The supplements were formulated and fed in amounts to supply 75% of the protein requirements of a medium frame calf gaining 0.23 kg/day. The animals in T2 and T3 consumed 1.60 and 0.86 kg/head/day of supplement, respectively. Average daily gains were significantly greater (P < 0.05) for T2 (1.03 kg/d) and T3 (0.93 kg/d) than for T1 (0.73 kg/d). Estimated supplement conversion favored the animals in T3 over T2 (4.30 vs. 5.33 kg of suplement/kg of additional gain). The cost of the weight gain attributed to the effect of the supplements was
