The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of ethnic identity and athletic identity on locus of control for college student-athletes. Further comparison of student-athletes on ethnicity, gender, and type of sport (team vs. individual) was also examined. Previous research examining the roles of ethnic identity and athletic identity within the framework of locus of control is very limited. Data from 179 participants were analyzed using two hierarchical regression analyses and a MANCOVA. The results indicated that being African American was related to higher values on both the powerful others and chance scales of external control controlling for a block of descriptive variables. Possessing a stronger athletic identity also led to higher values on powerful others and being female was related to higher values on chance. MANCOVA analyses showed no gender or type of sport differences on measures of locus of control. The study has several implications for professionals in the field of counseling psychology. Directions for future research are offered.
