Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2002.
This study reflects exegetically, historically, hermeneutically, and theologically upon the fact that encounters with texts change people's lives. Chapters 1 and 2 establish the relevance and viability of ancient and medieval interpretive practices of moral allegory (tropology) and discretio spirituum (discernment) for contemporary debates in hermeneutics and literary theory. Chapters 3--5 each examine the morally formative reading practices displayed in and demanded by select works of early modern English and French literature: Racine's Phedre, Milton's Paradise Lost, and Shakespeare's Hamlet. The concluding chapter inquires into the possibility and desirability of retrieving practices of 'spiritual' reading for the contemporary study and teaching of literature.
