Using constructivist methodology, data was collected using heuristic and hermeneutic methods to 'synthesize' conclusions following immersion in selected leadership literature. Key themes appearing in the literature studied were identified, categorized and compared. Concepts that appeared repeatedly were used to identify 'pervasive themes' from the literature. Key themes were sought in three categories: (1) Themes appearing in books by the same author. (2) Themes appearing in specific decades (1970, 1980, and 1990). (3) Themes appearing repeatedly in a 'collective' literature study.

Chapter One assesses the current state of leadership research and describes the need for an improved leadership 'construct'. Chapter Two review existing leadership literature from 1930--1998. Chapter Three describes the methodology used in the study and includes a narrative of the researcher's reasoning processes as constructivist research framework is developed. Chapter Four describes the data collection processes and methodology used in the study. A summary of each of the four researchers' contributions to the field of leadership theory and key themes that emerged from their work is included. Chapter Five examines selected works of the four writer/researchers in three separate time blocks, the 1970s, the 1980s and the 1990s. Chapter Six surveys the work of the four writer/researchers using a 'networking' perspectives. Broad themes and perspectives emerging from the study of individual and collective work and their implications for leadership theory in the field of educational leadership are identified.
