This dissertation studies the effects of macroeconomic shocks on the well being of people in developing countries. In particular, it studies the case of Argentina. Health and educational attainment improved during the prosperous years of the early nineties. Since 1998, several external shocks, combined with unsound economic policy, have precipitated a terrible recession.

520 $a The first chapter uses the Permanent Household Survey to measure the consequences of the economic recession on schooling the decisions of people 12--17 years old. Attendance may be affected by shocks in real income if borrowing constraints exist. The findings are that youths whose parents are less educated drop out of school to work in order to help smooth household income and that the effect is large enough to reverse much of the gain realized over the 1990s.
520 $a The second chapter uses state-level Vital Statistics data to examine the evolution of the infant mortality rate in all the provinces of Argentina over the period 1991--1999. The findings are that expansions in medical facilities, a Mother-Infant and Nutritional Program, and improvement in mother's education that took place during this period, all reduced infant mortality and were responsible for 32.2% of the decline.
520 $a The third chapter focuses on the effect of the economic crisis on infant mortality and fertility. In particular, it studies the effect of unemployment on births and infant deaths using individual Vital Statistics data for the 23 provinces and the Federal District of Argentina during the period 1991--2002. The findings are that low birthweight and infant mortality were not significantly affected by the macroeconomic recession experienced by Argentina. Moreover, this study shows that aggregate fertility rates fell dramatically due to this economic downturn.
