The term attention has been used extensively by those who study memory and those who study attention. It is not clear, however, whether the word attention in both these cases refers to the same process. When given a memory test for items they saw or heard earlier, people who have hemispatial neglect recall fewer items from the left than the right. It is possible that the attentional deficit in neglect causes an encoding problem for items appearing on the left. However, studies examining the ability of people with neglect to report visual scenes that were learned before the brain lesion suggest that the effect of visual neglect acting at retrieval is sufficient to account for the presumed encoding deficit in the neglect memory literature.

This paper tests the hypothesis that the effects of neglect at retrieval are sufficient to account for the poor performance of people with visual neglect when recalling items that had appeared on the left at learning.
