The proliferation of villa building in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Ragusa (Dubrovnik) was one of the most visible manifestations of the city's golden age, a time when it accumulated immense wealth through trade, enjoyed peace secured by its skilled diplomacy, and boasted a rich artistic and intellectual life. By the end of the sixteenth century, over three hundred villas stood in Ragusa's countryside and on its Adriatic shore and islands. This was an extraordinary revival of an ancient ideal that resulted in part from the city's desire to recreate its classical past as the Roman city of Epidaurum, and in part from a constant influx of ideas from Italy regarding the meaning and benefits of villeggiatura. This dissertation analyzes ways in which these humanist notions shaped Ragusa's villa culture in the fifteenth and early sixteenth century, but also argues that its villa ideology changed once the Counter-Reformation became the predominant social force in the second half of the Cinquecento. Catering to the new spiritual needs of villa patrons at the end of the Renaissance, Ragusan villas took on additional functions, often becoming sites for commemoration and spiritual purification.

Based on extensive archival and field research, the dissertation develops around three primary areas of focus: it examines the humanist notions that contributed to the villa revival, shows how villa architecture became a signifier of patrician identity, and argues that villa ideology functioned as a flexible construct that was continuously shaped by the changing religious and cultural forces. In its treatment of important, yet traditionally neglected architectural monuments, this dissertation contributes to a much more geographically inclusive notion of the Renaissance. It is a case study of how artistic and intellectual ideas were transmitted during the Renaissance, demonstrating once again that the modern geopolitical borders between the East and the West were not always relevant in the early modern period.
