The issue addressed in this study is the relationship between pastoral leadership and the effectiveness of local congregations of the Church of Christ/Christian Churches in Metro Manila, Philippines. Research focuses on shaping influences in the lives of the pastoral leaders of these congregations based on leadership emergence factors primarily taken from J. Robert Clinton's Leadership Emergence Theory and on the pastor's leadership style as described by the Full-Range Leadership Model developed by Bernard Bass.

520 $a Four factors are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the nine churches examined in this study: (1) the relationship of the church and its members with God, (2) the relationships of the members of the church with one another, (3) the relationship of the church and its members with the world, and (4) the numerical growth of the church's active membership. The Church Effectiveness Questionnaire (CEQ) and the Statistical Report were developed by the author to gather data on these four factors. The pastors and selected members of the churches examined completed these instruments. Four of the nine churches met the criteria for being considered "effective" churches.
520 $a Eleven factors are used in considering the leadership emergence of the pastoral leaders of the churches, including the four elements of Focused Life development. Leadership style is examined using the Full-Range Leadership Model which examines transformational, transactional, and nontransactional leadership behaviors. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire Form 5X (MLQ) was administered to the pastor and selected members in each congregation to collect data concerning the nine factors of the Full-Range Leadership Model.
520 $a This research indicates that the presence of long-term mentoring for urban ministry, a special challenge to ministry, and an age appropriate understanding of the focal elements of a focus life in the life of the pastor is associated with effective churches in Metro Manila. A relationship between churches effectiveness and transformational leadership behaviors in the pastor is also indicated.
