Thesis (D.Miss.)--School of Intercultural Studies, Biola University, 2004.
Since the gospel was first preached in Java 400 years ago, many Christians and churches have come to inhabit the island today. This dissertation examines whether the Javanese Church is numerically growing, within the province of Yogyakarta. Data from three levels of church structure were analyzed: denominational, regional, and local church approaches. The dissertation includes brief historical, cultural, anthropological, and demographical analyses of the Javanese people in the context of missions. An extensive overview of Javanese church history as well as the spread and practice of Islam in the Javanese context are also explored.

This study found that despite numerous disadvantages, the Javanese Church was able to draw Muslims to Christ. The study also surveyed the major motivations of Muslims to convert, what part of the gospel message was most attractive to them, and the means through which they came to hear the gospel. The study found that the Javanese people were most receptive to lifestyle evangelism, being inspired into faith by witnessing the Christian lifestyle. Although small in numbers, the Javanese Church is growing and Muslims are accepting Christ as their Savior.

The study shows that the role of the pastor is very important in church growth. Important lessons to be drawn from this study include the need to refocus on Biblical church growth principles, to adapt effective strategies for church size, the active contextualization of Christianity in indigenous cultures, the need for the Javanese Church to actively unite and cooperate, the need for a clear vision of world missions, Biblical leadership, effective discipleship for pastors, and the need for the independency of the Javanese Church. This dissertation reveals the great potential of the Javanese Church to engage in world missions, specifically to save lost souls in the Muslim world.
