Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Guelph (Canada), 1987.
An open hole infiltration technique, called the Guelph Permeameter (GP) method, is developed and tested for in situ determination of field-saturated hydraulic conductivity, K(,fs), and matric flux potential, (phi)(,m), above the water table. The method measures the steady-state recharge, Q(,s), necessary to maintain a constant depth of water, H, in an uncased well of radius, a. An in-hole Mariotte bottle apparatus, called the "Guelph Permeameter", is used to maintain H and to measure the corresponding Q(,s). K(,fs) and (phi)(,m) are calculated from Q(,s), H and a using a steady-state, quasi-analytic solution for saturated-unsaturated flow about the well. Estimates of sorptivity, S, and the (alpha) parameter of the exponential hydraulic conductivity - pressure head function can also be obtained via the calculated K(,fs) and (phi)(,m) values. Detailed, step-by-step procedures are given for well construction and preparation, permeameter installation and operation, and for calculation and assessment of K(,fs), (phi)(,m), S and (alpha).

Laboratory sand tank experiments and numerical simulations validate the GP theory and indicate that the neglect of capillarity (parameterized by the (phi)(,m)/K(,fs) ratio) in traditional well permeameter analyses can result in an overestimate of K(,fs) by more than an order of magnitude. The numerical simulations also confirm that K(,fs) and (phi)(,m) are appropriate parameters for describing flow out of a well into unsaturated porous media.

Field comparison of the GP method to vertically and horizontally oriented soil cores on a Guelph loam soil found that the GP method effectively averaged a macropore-induced, vertical-horizontal anisotropy in hydraulic conductivity.

An attractive feature of the GP method which is not provided by most other field methods is that the analysis can provide both an assessment of the accuracy of the K(,fs) and (phi)(,m) results, and an indication of when the assumptions of the GP theory have been seriously violated.

Additional practical features of the GP method include speed, portability, low water use, simple equipment that is easily operated by one person, a practical measurement range of K(,fs) of about 10('-4) - 10('-8) ms('-1), and the ability to depth-profile.
