Because the University of Louisville purchased an existing campus, the Louisville House of Refuge, only a few elements of early types of campus plans are reflected in the campus. However, throughout the history of campus planning at the University many of the older as well as the contemporary theories of planning are evident. None of the plans were constructed in their entirety but some elements of each may be found on the present Belknap campus. As a consequence, the University of Louisville today is an amalgamation of late nineteenth- and twentieth-century planning concepts.
