Thesis (M.A.L.S.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2004.
The purpose of this case study was to examine the physiological and psychological health benefits of a regular and consistent progressive strength training program for women using a developmental perspective. After researching current literature and pivotal studies, which formed the basis for this study, a hypothesis was formed that progressive strength training results in a positive health outcome for women in their 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and beyond! To test this hypothesis a 12 week strength training program for women 35--65 years old and struggling with weight management (n = 31) was developed, implemented, observed, analyzed, and evaluated. Upon completion of the research project, data from the study was compared with current research findings. Strength training increases functional capabilities and independence, decreases morbidity, reverses the effects of depression and obesity, and has the potential for turning back the aging clock. This research and case study demonstrates the powerful interconnection of human behavior and resulting biopsychosocial health. In conclusion, this research agrees with the literature and current studies that support strength training for women as an effective health and disease intervention to improve physiological and psychological health, subjective well-being, and everyday quality of life!
