Thesis (M.A.)--Boston College, 2003.
This thesis looks at males who contradict dominant perceptions of masculinity by participating in ballet, a dance form that is embedded with feminine and homosexual stereotypes. As a case study, how do male ballet dancers construct their gender identity ? Using qualitative research techniques the dancers articulate how masculinity is reformed in the dance subculture to more fluid. These male dancers often times escaped the dominant socialization process. Other family members were involved in the arts. Once exposed to ballet they describe becoming completely consumed in this environment. Responses to social repercussions included: justifying their involvement by the standard perceptions of masculinity, such as marriage, success in the field, or proximity to female dancers; hypermasculinity, such as harassment of other male or female dancers; and with self-doubt and the questioning of one's sexuality. Ultimately, the subculture of ballet nurtures an alternative form of masculinity that allows for expression and exploration.
