The purpose of this study was to investigate the transient post exercise alterations in immune function following 1 hour of rowing exercise. Furthermore, the effect of carbohydrate supplementation on these changes in immune function following exercise was determined. One hour of rowing exercise at 72% of VO 2max provided sufficient stimulus to alter post exercise immune function when compared to resting values. Carbohydrate supplementation before, during, and after the rowing exercise was only able to attenuate the increase in circulating lymphocytes five minutes after exercise when compared to a placebo group. All other blood, immune, and hormonal measures were not altered by carbohydrate ingestion. The results of this investigation have shown that one hour of rowing exercise provides a sufficient stimulus to alter the acute immune response to exercise. Also, carbohydrate supplementation was found to have little effect on immune function following exercise of this type, intensity, and duration.
