This study elaborates the psychospiritual dimensions of the 5Rhythms moving meditation developed by Gabrielle Roth and investigates the Open Floor process, a movement therapy ritual that has emerged from the 5Rhythms practice in combination with Gestalt therapy and Integrative Body Psychotherapy principles. The Open Floor format is considered an original contribution to the fields of dance/movement therapy and the 5Rhythms practice. A combined phenomenological and heuristic research model was used to study the experiences of 27 5Rhythms dancers in a 10-day program.

520 $a The literature review includes the broad base of influences that have contributed to this work from the fields of humanistic, somatic, pre- and perinatal psychologies, expressive arts therapy, Gestalt therapy, psychodrama, and dance/movement therapies both historical and contemporary. The reader is introduced to the 5Rhythms and the spiritual orientation that supports this practice and to the different levels of the Moving Center Maps used in the 5Rhythms meditation. The theoretical underpinnings, the intentions, the structure and the practice of the Open Floor process are explained in detail.
520 $a The 5Rhythms program has been shown to be a versatile vehicle for the embodiment of psychological processes. The Open Floor process enhances this effect in a way that fosters a strengthened individual and collective identity and connection. This research accentuates the social and psychological benefits of a creative community such as that which 5Rhythms and Open Floor practices inspire. Because these practices are a nonverbal, nonlinear, creative expression of a movement meditation, a video tape is offered as the primary communication of the essence of the study.
