Health care providers have demonstrated a resurgence of interest in spirituality in the past decade. As a result, a prior paradigm of nursing that includes the spirit as part of the whole human has been rediscovered. This paradigm directs nurse educators to prepare students to provide spiritual care. In order to address the spiritual aspect of client care, nurse educators need to understand student spirituality and develop curricula that address spiritual phenomena.

520 $a To shed light on the void of information regarding student spirituality, a study was conducted to explore the relationship between nursing education and students' levels of spirituality. Neuman's System Model (Neuman, 1989) was the theoretical framework of the study. The Spirituality Assessment Scale (SAS) (Howden, 1992) was administered to an ethnically diverse convenience sample of vocational nursing students at a state college in Southeast Texas. Spirituality of first semester and third semester nursing students was compared. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (t = .36, p < .05). On the SAS, the subscale for purpose and meaning in life was the most prevalent attribute of both groups. However, the least prevalent attributes were different for each group. First semester students scored lowest on the transcendence subscale. However, third semester students scored lowest on the interconnectedness subscale. These findings have implications for nursing educators and future research.
